Course Credit Submission to the NMLS

The NMLS requires that education providers report education credit hours within 7 calendar days. Mortgage Educators & Compliance aims to report online education credits faster than the 7 day window.


Course Information

This course meets the required 20 hours of NMLS-approved pre-license education needed to obtain a mortgage license. It contains 3 hours of Federal Law, 3 hours of ethics, 2 hours of non-traditional mortgage lending, plus 12 hours of undefined electives. 


It is presented in an online instructor-led video course with supplementary literature and content. The course is made up of 7 chapters broken into 5 minute sections that require clicking to advance to the next video and includes a handful of small quizzes. After completing the introduction to the course, each section will start with an average duration of 5 minutes per section. Each 5 minute section will be followed by an activity. These activities can be either short quizzes or case studies focusing on certain concepts.


At the end of each chapter, there is a chapter quiz with an End of Course Assessment at the end of the course. Students must complete all presentations and activity sections, all quizzes and tests, and the End of Course Assessment in order to receive credit for the course. After completing the course, students will receive a certificate of completion and their hours will be submitted to the NMLS within 7 calendar days.


This mortgage training course is offered in three separate tracks. These tracks allow both MEC and you, the student, to remain compliant with NMLS regulations by taking and completing the course within a specific start and end date. Please select a course start date before adding the course to your cart. Courses begin weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. NMLS SAFE 20 Hour Pre-License Course Outline

Chapter 1: Becoming an MLO

This chapter covers the basics of becoming a mortgage loan originator and presents a brief history of the industry to help new students better understand the mortgage industry. Also introduced in this chapter is prohibited MLO conduct and possible disciplinary action.


Chapter 2: Learning the Products and the Programs

This chapter covers the major products and programs available in the mortgage market today, definitions of basic terminology associated with the mortgage products and programs, as well as products and programs that work for specific types of borrowers.


Chapter 3: Initial Application

This chapter covers the first crucial part of the origination process as specifically for MLOs. This section will help you get the answers that you need to help your borrowers discover their best loan options that they need for their given situation.


Chapter 4: Processing and Underwriting

This chapter will help you to understand the analysis process of a borrower's application, walk you through identifying key laws that govern product and program analysis, appraisals, title reports, and title insurance.


Chapter 5: Closing and Funding

This course chapter will help you to identify the role of the settlement agent/closing agent, relate the process for funding, understand the documents in the mortgage closing process, and apply the mortgage math processes to actual mortgage scenarios.


Chapter 6: Mortgage Ethics

This chapter will help you understand the idea of ethics, identify major fraud schemes, UDAAPS, describe ways to ensure fair lending and restate prohibited practices in origination.


End of Course Assessment

Take the final two case studies of the course and the 25 question End of Course Assessment will test your understanding of the course.


10 Hour NV (Nevada) Pre-Licensing Course

Chapter 1: Licensing Law and Regulation

This chapter covers licensing law and regulation regarding mortgage loan originators, brokers and bankers. This chapter includes sections on the regulatory authority in NV, key definitions, who is exempt from licensure, the requirements for initial license as a mortgage loan originator, broker or banker, the renewal of licensure for mortgage loan originators, brokers and bankers as well as a section on records and financial statements required to maintain a license in NV. This chapter also includes a section on mortgage servicer licensing and regulation.


Chapter 2: Compliance

This chapter covers compliance with the Nevada Revised Statutes and the Nevada Administrative Code governing mortgage companies and agents. This includes sections on escrow and trust accounts, disclosure and advertising, loan payments and defaults, conditions and limitations on certain mortgage transactions and unfair lending practices.


Chapter 3: Disciplinary Action

This chapter covers the disciplinary action procedures governing mortgage loan originators and brokers. This chapter includes sections on grounds for disciplinary action and acceptable disciplinary action, investigations of violations and unsafe practices, hearings and appeals, and penalties.


Chapter 4: Student Loans for Mortgage Professionals

This chapter covers basic information related to the types of student loans and the guidelines under Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, VA, FHA and USDA loans. This chapter will include sections on key terminology related to student loans and what a mortgage professional might see on a credit report and then will transition into discussing the guidelines under major secondary market entities. We will also cover how a mortgage professional can help a borrower with student loans. We will here from an industry expert, Amanda Jackson, on a few things that she suggests when loan officers send her clients with a lot of student debt.


Chapter 5: TRID 2.0

In this chapter, we are going to discuss the TILA-RESPA Integrated Disclosure Rule, we will do a brief overview and then review the changes made by the new CFPB rule. During this chapter, the instructor will spend 10 minutes reviewing the course and then take additional questions regarding problem areas that the students are having with TRID. Then the instructor will review the new changes and take questions about those changes.


Chapter 6: Reverse Mortgages

In this chapter, we will discuss reverse mortgages. Specifically, we will be discussing how a reverse mortgage works, the new changes made by HUD to the Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) program, how to qualify your borrower and how to avoid key problems and complaints that come up when dealing with reverse borrowers.


Chapter 7: Non-Qualified Mortgage Products

In this chapter we are going to discuss non-qualified mortgage products or Non-QM products. We are going to discuss the new importance of non-QM products, market trends, and discuss some examples of some Non-QM products that are available on the market.


Chapter 8: FCRA, Identity Theft and Security Freezes

 In this chapter, we are going to discuss Identity Theft and the Fair Credit Reporting Act. This chapter will include a discussion of what identity theft is, and red flags associated with identity theft. Then the chapter will transition into a conversation about the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the 2018 changes made to it, including free credit/security freezes and fraud alerts.


End of Course Assessment

In this chapter, you will take the End of Course Assessment and complete the end-of-course survey. The End Of Course Assessment is a 35 question End Of Course Assessment with a pool of 50 questions addressing all information covered in the course. You will need to score at least 70% to pass the End Of Course Assessment. You may also fill out an optional End-of-Course Survey to provide feedback to the instructor.
